North Carolina Posted 199 New Roles This Week, Down 18% From 242

By Ben Garves

North Carolina employers opened 199 new roles this week across the employer job boards Career App crawls, down from 242 the week before. That is 43 fewer roles, a decline of about 18%, in a week when new postings across all the boards we track moved the other way: 9,348 new roles against 8,654 the prior week, a gain of 694, or roughly 8%.

North Carolina versus the whole week

So North Carolina did not just grow more slowly than the rest of the week. It moved in the opposite direction, and by a wide enough margin to shrink its share of new postings from about 2.8% of all new roles last week to about 2.1% this week. The week-over-week comparison counts only boards we were already reading before the comparison started, so a newly added employer board cannot inflate or deflate it.

Where North Carolina sits this week

North Carolina is one of twelve states with the most new roles this week, each carrying at least ten. Plenty of other states opened roles too, so this is not a map of where all the jobs are.

New roles this week by state

North Carolina sits well behind California at 852, Texas at 592, New York at 487 and Florida at 458, and close to Massachusetts at 196 and Pennsylvania at 194.

Among those twelve states, eight posted fewer new roles than the week before. North Carolina's 18% drop is the second steepest of the group by percentage, behind Illinois, which fell from 263 to 209, about 21%. In raw count, New York gave back the most, 81 roles, followed by California at 70 and Illinois at 54.

The gainers were concentrated. Tennessee jumped from 154 to 255, an increase of 101 roles and by far the biggest move in either direction as a share of its own base. Colorado added 25, going from 175 to 200. Michigan added six and Florida added four. Ohio slipped from 282 to 272. Set against that spread, North Carolina's week looks like the sharper end of a broad pullback in the larger states, with the overall increase driven by activity outside this top group.

The employers hiring hardest this week

These counts cover every board we read rather than any one state, but they show where the week's volume came from. AdventHealth opened 611 new roles and now shows 978 open listings, the largest single contribution of any employer. Target followed with 330 new roles against 808 open, then Accenture at 328 new and 778 open, Ranger Boats at 296 new and 747 open, and Meijer at 272 new and 652 open. Citigroup, Tyson Foods, Cleveland Clinic, JLL and Marriott International each added between 203 and 233.

The wider week

The job search shows 59,799 open listings today from 679 employers hiring. Against 9,348 new roles, 11,386 roles closed over the same seven days, so the overall pool is still draining faster than it fills. Closures trail the employer taking a listing down by about a week, since we see them when we next re-read the board. Remote roles made up 5% of what opened.

On pay, the figures we publish are the ranges employers printed on their listings, annualized to USD. Software Engineer carries a posted median of $244,900 across 1,018 listings, the deepest sample of any occupation this week, and Machine Learning Engineer sits at $272,800 across 94.

You can follow the daily movement on US hiring trends, day by day.

Correction, October 19, 2026: The pay medians in this post were calculated from the top of each posted pay range rather than its midpoint, which is the basis our occupation pages use. Midpoint medians are typically 10% to 17% lower than the figures shown here.
