New York Opened 431 Roles This Week, Down 22 While Postings Overall Rose 8.5%

By Ben Garves

New York opened 431 new roles this week across the employer job boards Career App tracks, 22 fewer than the 453 it opened the week before. That is a 4.9% dip, and it runs against the wider direction of the week: new roles across every state totaled 8,615, up from 7,939, a gain of 8.5%.

New York vs. the week overall

So New York went one way while the aggregate went the other. The gap between the two is about 13 percentage points. New York's 431 roles account for roughly 5% of everything that opened this week.

New York against the other busy states

Among the states with the most new roles this week, only California (827) and Texas (512) opened more than New York. Within that group, the week split almost evenly between states that gained and states that gave ground.

New roles this week by state

The states that added roles week over week:

The states that slipped:

  • Texas: 512, down from 608 (-96)
  • Tennessee: 231, down from 270 (-39)
  • New York: 431, down from 453 (-22)
  • Ohio: 245, down from 266 (-21)
  • Illinois: 215, down from 221 (-6)
  • Colorado: 186, down from 190 (-4)

New York's decline is the third-largest of that set in absolute terms, well behind Texas. In percentage terms it is the mildest of the three biggest states. The week-over-week comparison counts only boards we were already tracking before it began, so a newly added employer board cannot inflate any of these moves.

Who was posting

Our employer counts are not split by state, so none of the following is credited to New York specifically. Still, these are the ten employers behind the largest share of the week's new roles:

Health systems, banks, retail and consulting dominate that list, and three of the ten are hospital or pharmacy operators. We did not have a ranked occupation breakdown for this week, so the roles behind New York's 431 are not separable by job title here.

The wider week

The boards we crawl currently carry 59,860 open listings from 680 employers. Closures ran ahead of openings: 10,287 roles closed in the last seven days against 8,615 opened. Closures lag the employer taking a role down by about a week, since we see it when we next re-read the board. Remote work accounted for 5% of new roles.

On pay, the figures below are the ranges employers printed on their own listings, annualized to USD, and they are not split by state. Across the listings with posted pay, Engineering Manager carried the highest median at $289,000 from 185 listings, followed by Machine Learning Engineer at $272,800 from 94 listings. Software Engineer had by far the deepest sample, 1,006 listings, at a median of $246,400.

Day-by-day movement is on the US hiring trends page, and current New York openings sit on the Jobs in New York page.

Correction, October 19, 2026: The pay medians in this post were calculated from the top of each posted pay range rather than its midpoint, which is the basis our occupation pages use. Midpoint medians are typically 10% to 17% lower than the figures shown here.
