Respiratory Therapist
A respiratory therapist is a credentialed clinician who diagnoses and treats patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders, from premature infants to older adults with COPD or COVID-19 complications. Core duties center on ventilator management, arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, and ongoing patient assessment in ICUs, emergency departments, and pulmonary rehab units, often responding to codes as a CPR/ACLS-certified team member. The role requires an associate or bachelor's degree in respiratory care plus state licensure, and practitioners rely heavily on EHR documentation to track ventilator settings and patient response over time.
Duties & responsibilities
- Assess patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders across all age groups
- Manage mechanical ventilators and adjust settings based on patient response
- Perform and interpret arterial blood gas tests and pulmonary function studies
- Deliver therapeutic treatments including oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and chest physiotherapy
- Respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies as a certified CPR/ACLS team member
- Monitor patient progress through EHR documentation and communicate findings to clinical teams
- Provide direct patient care in ICUs, emergency departments, and pulmonary rehabilitation settings
