Occupational Therapist
Occupational therapists help patients recovering from injury, illness, or disability regain the skills needed for daily living and work, starting with a detailed patient assessment and progressing through a customized treatment plan. They apply rehabilitation therapy techniques—ranging from adaptive equipment training to fine motor exercises—in hospitals, clinics, schools, and home health settings, documenting progress in electronic health records. A strong emphasis on patient education helps clients and families carry over strategies into everyday routines.
Duties & responsibilities
- Evaluate patients to assess functional abilities and develop individualized treatment plans
- Deliver therapeutic interventions and exercises to help patients regain independence in daily activities
- Teach patients and families adaptive strategies and techniques to support recovery at home
- Fabricate and fit adaptive equipment and assistive devices such as splints and mobility aids
- Document patient progress and treatment outcomes in electronic health records
- Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members to coordinate patient care
