Sumo

Sumo is Japan's national sport, a form of full-contact wrestling in which two rikishi (wrestlers) attempt to force each other out of a circular ring (dohyo) or make any part of the opponent's body other than the soles of the feet touch the ground. Matches are brief but intense, preceded by elaborate Shinto-derived rituals such as salt-throwing and ceremonial stomping, and wrestlers follow a strict rank hierarchy topped by the yokozuna. It has deep religious and cultural roots in Japan and draws devoted fans both as a spectator sport and, for practitioners, as a highly disciplined lifestyle.
