Sanghyang

Sanghyang is a sacred Balinese trance dance and exorcistic ritual performed to ward off evil spirits and disease from a village. Performers, sometimes young girls or a rider on a hobby horse (as in the fire-dance variant Sanghyang Jaran), enter a trance state induced by chanting and incense before performing stylized, spontaneous movements guided by invoked spirits.
