Royal Shrovetide Football

Royal Shrovetide Football is a traditional mass-participation ball game played annually on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday in the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England, with roots going back centuries. Two enormous teams, the Up'Ards and Down'Ards (determined by which side of the local river a player was born), attempt to move a ball across the town and "goal" it several miles apart, with matches lasting hours amid huge, largely rule-light scrums through streets and even rivers.
