Medieval Football

Medieval football describes early, loosely regulated forms of mob football played in villages and towns across medieval Europe, particularly England, often involving large numbers of participants moving a ball toward a goal through the streets and fields with few rules and considerable roughness. These chaotic matches, sometimes tied to festivals like Shrove Tuesday, are considered ancestors of modern football codes like soccer and rugby. A few towns, such as Ashbourne in England, still hold traditional annual matches descended from this medieval form.
