Plaquita

The plaquita (or 'guagua') is a wooden or metal percussion idiophone used in Cuban and broader Caribbean music, consisting of a hollow wooden block or pair of wood plates struck rhythmically with sticks. It provides a steady, high-pitched timekeeping pattern in charanga, son, and danzón ensembles, complementing instruments like the güiro and timbales. Percussionists use it to lock in the clave-based rhythms that anchor Afro-Cuban dance music.
