Fierljeppen

Fierljeppen is a traditional Frisian sport, popular in the Netherlands, in which competitors sprint toward a long pole planted in a canal, climb it as it tips forward, and try to jump as far as possible into the sand or grass on the far bank. It combines running, pole-climbing agility, and long-jump technique, and has been practiced since the 18th century originally as a practical way for farmers to cross waterways. Today it is a competitive summer sport with its own Frisian championships and a devoted regional following.
