Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art and combat sport that emphasizes ground fighting, joint locks, and chokeholds to force an opponent's submission, allowing a smaller person to overcome a larger, stronger opponent through leverage and technique. Developed in Brazil in the early 20th century from Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo roots by the Gracie family among others, it has become foundational to modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Practitioners train in gyms called academies, progressing through a belt ranking system, and are drawn to its self-defense value, physical conditioning, and chess-like strategic depth.
