Aid Climbing
Aid climbing is a style of rock climbing in which climbers use gear such as pitons, cams, and ladders (etriers) attached to the rock to support body weight and progress upward, rather than relying solely on natural hand and foot holds as in free climbing. It's typically used to ascend otherwise impossible sections of a route, such as blank walls or big walls like those in Yosemite, and appeals to climbers interested in technical rope systems and historic mountaineering routes.
