Posted Median for "Engineer" Roles Fell to $90,750 — On Five Listings

The posted median for jobs titled Engineer came in at $90,750 over the last 30 days, down from $179,090 in the 30 days before that — a drop of $88,340, or about 49%. That is the biggest percentage move in our posted-pay table right now. It is also built on five listings against 15.

Those are employer-posted salary ranges, annualized to USD (hourly rates at 2,080 hours), taken from the employer job boards we crawl. They are not member-reported pay, and they cover only postings where the employer published a number.

With a pool that small, one posting decides the median. Five listings means the middle value is the third one; swap a single senior role for a single technician-level role and the figure moves by tens of thousands. So the honest read of a 49% decline on five listings is that the mix of who posted changed, not that engineering pay across the boards we track was cut in half in a month.

The generic title is the outlier

What makes the Engineer number stand out is that the more specific engineering titles moved the other way over the same two windows:

• Manufacturing Engineer: $222,000 last 30 days, up from $156,000 — 21 listings against 79
• Analytics Engineer: $206,500, up from $151,000 — 8 listings against 6
• Quality Engineer: $203,000, up from $153,250 — 10 listings against 21
• Network Engineer: $160,000, down from $215,050 — 5 listings against 17

Manufacturing Engineer is the sturdiest of the group, and even there the pool shrank from 79 priced listings to 21. Network Engineer is the only other engineering title falling, and it shares Engineer's problem: five listings in the current window.

Where the deeper pools sit

For a steadier reference point, the occupations with hundreds of priced listings tell a much calmer story. Across all open listings with posted pay, Engineering Manager sits at a $280,000 median on 245 listings, Machine Learning Engineer at $274,000 on 129, Software Engineer at $240,000 on 1,327, and Mechanical Engineer at $186,000 on 127.

The $90,750 Engineer median is below every one of those. That is consistent with how the plain "Engineer" title gets used on employer boards — it collects roles that specific titles would otherwise sort into very different pay bands.

Hiring context

Engineer did not appear among the 12 occupations with the most new postings this week. The engineering-adjacent titles that did: Software Engineer with 67 new postings (down from 72 the prior week), Engineering Manager with 13 (down from 18), and Data Engineer with 13 (up from zero).

The broader board is busier. We logged 9,969 new listings in the last seven days against 7,067 the week before, and 29,758 over the last 30 days against 28,085 in the prior 30 — across 57,843 open listings from 685 employers hiring. On the skills side, Python led the week with 98 new postings, followed by Microsoft Excel at 65, Salesforce at 64 and SQL at 64.
