Zourkhaneh

The zourkhaneh (zurkhaneh), meaning "house of strength," is a traditional Iranian gymnasium where practitioners perform varzesh-e bastani, an ancient Persian system of athletic and martial exercises done to rhythmic drumming and poetry recitation by a morshed. Exercises include swinging heavy wooden clubs (meels), shield presses, and wrestling, combining physical training with a code of chivalry, spirituality, and communal ritual dating back centuries.
