Sufi Whirling

Sufi whirling is a form of physically active meditation practiced by the Mevlevi order of Sufism, founded by followers of the 13th-century Persian poet and mystic Rumi. Practitioners, known as whirling dervishes, spin repeatedly on one foot in a controlled, ritualized dance called the Sema, aiming to enter a trance-like state and achieve spiritual union with the divine. Today it is performed both as religious ceremony and as a cultural performance, particularly in Turkey.
