Subcontrabass Flute

The subcontrabass flute is one of the largest and lowest-pitched members of the flute family, standing several feet tall with folded tubing to make it playable, and sounding roughly three octaves below the standard concert flute. Because of their size, cost, and rarity, they are built by only a handful of specialist makers and used mainly by flute choirs and contemporary music ensembles seeking extreme low-register color. Players are drawn to the novelty and the deep, breathy tone unattainable on smaller flutes.
