Raqs Sharqi

Raqs sharqi ("oriental dance") is the Egyptian style of belly dance, characterized by fluid, sinuous movements of the hips, torso, and arms performed to Arabic music, often in a fitted costume with a hip belt. It evolved from folk traditions into a staged and cabaret performance art in early 20th-century Cairo, becoming the most internationally recognized form of Middle Eastern dance. Practitioners and students value it for its emphasis on isolation of body movements, musicality, and expressive storytelling through dance.
