Pehlwani

Pehlwani, also called kushti, is a traditional form of wrestling practiced in South Asia, particularly India and Pakistan, blending native malla-yuddha wrestling with Persian koshti pahlavani techniques introduced under Mughal rule. Wrestlers (pehlwans) train in earthen-floored akhara gymnasiums, following strict dietary and lifestyle disciplines alongside physical training. It remains both a traditional folk sport and a path to modern competitive wrestling in the region.
