Para Swimming

Para swimming is competitive swimming for athletes with physical, visual, or intellectual impairments, featuring the same strokes and pool distances as able-bodied swimming but with a detailed classification system (S1-S10 for physical impairments, S11-S13 for visual impairments, S14 for intellectual impairments) to group competitors of comparable functional ability. Some adaptations are allowed, such as starting in the water rather than diving, and tappers who signal visually impaired swimmers near the wall. It has been a cornerstone Paralympic sport since the first Games in 1960 and draws swimmers for its rigorous training and head-to-head racing format.
