Field Handball

Field handball is the original outdoor version of team handball, played on a large grass or turf pitch with larger teams (traditionally 11-a-side) compared to the now far more common indoor handball played on a court with 7-a-side teams. It was popular in Northern Europe in the early-to-mid 20th century and was even an Olympic sport once, at the 1936 Berlin Games, before indoor handball became the dominant and Olympic form. Today it survives mainly as a historical curiosity or in a few niche regional leagues.
