Canyoneering

Canyoneering is the sport of traveling through canyons using a combination of techniques such as hiking, scrambling, climbing, rappelling down waterfalls or cliffs, and swimming or wading through pools, often in narrow slot canyons. It is popular in regions with extensive canyon terrain, such as the American Southwest, and requires rope skills, route-finding, and awareness of flash-flood hazards. Practitioners are drawn to the combination of technical challenge and access to dramatic, otherwise inaccessible scenery.
