Backstroke

Backstroke is one of the four competitive swimming strokes, performed on the back with an alternating windmill arm motion and a continuous flutter kick. It is the only competitive stroke swum face-up, so swimmers rely on ceiling flags and stroke counts to judge their distance to the wall. It is featured in Olympic and other competitive swimming events, as well as taught widely as a basic swimming skill.
