Sheffield Rules

The Sheffield Rules were a code of football laws drawn up in 1858 by Sheffield Football Club, one of the earliest attempts to standardize the game before the Football Association's laws became dominant. They permitted some practices later dropped from association football, such as a form of free kick called a 'rouge,' and were used by clubs in the Sheffield area for decades, influencing several elements eventually adopted into the modern FA rules, including corner kicks and throw-ins.
