Gig Racing
Gig racing is a rowing sport using traditional wooden gigs, long narrow six-oared boats historically used along the Cornish and Isles of Scilly coasts for pilotage, smuggling, and rescue work. Crews of six rowers plus a coxswain race these boats over set courses, with the sport centered in the UK, especially the annual World Pilot Gig Championships held in the Isles of Scilly. Participants are drawn to its blend of team endurance, tradition, and maritime heritage.
