Earthdog Trial

An earthdog trial is a dog sport and AKC-sanctioned test that evaluates small terriers' and dachshunds' natural instinct and ability to 'go to ground,' navigating underground tunnels to locate and work caged quarry (usually rats, kept safely enclosed) without harming them. Dogs are judged on their willingness to enter the den, follow the scent trail, and work the quarry by barking, digging, or scratching. It's popular with owners of breeds like Jack Russell terriers, dachshunds, and other earth-dog breeds as a way to exercise their dogs' bred-in hunting drive in a controlled setting.
