Coastal and Ocean Rowing

Coastal and ocean rowing is a form of competitive and recreational rowing conducted in open water along shorelines or across seas, using sturdier, more seaworthy boats than the flatwater shells used in river or lake rowing. It includes organized coastal rowing races over several kilometers as well as extreme ocean rowing expeditions, in which crews or solo rowers cross entire oceans (such as the Atlantic) unsupported over weeks. Rowers are drawn to the physical endurance challenge and the exposure to open-sea conditions rather than controlled racecourses.
