Clavichord
The clavichord is an early keyboard instrument, popular from the Renaissance through the 18th century, in which pressing a key causes a small metal blade called a tangent to strike the string directly, producing a very soft, intimate sound. Unlike the harpsichord, it allows subtle dynamic control and vibrato through finger pressure, making it prized for expressive, private practice and composition, notably by C.P.E. Bach. Early-music enthusiasts and keyboard historians play and collect clavichords to explore pre-piano keyboard repertoire.
