Ski Mountaineering

Ski mountaineering (also called ski touring racing or skimo) combines climbing mountains on skis fitted with climbing skins with skiing back down, often over remote alpine or backcountry terrain. It demands both climbing endurance and skiing skill, and is practiced as both a recreational backcountry pursuit and a competitive racing discipline, now included in the Winter Olympics. Practitioners are drawn to the combination of physical challenge, self-reliance, and access to untouched snow away from resorts.
