Scoring the hales refers to the goal-scoring method in the Alnwick Shrovetide Football match, an ancient traditional street football game played annually in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. The "hales" are goalposts made of decorated tree branches set up at either end of the pitch, and a team scores by throwing the ball over its hale three times. The event, tied to Shrove Tuesday festivities, is one of Britain's oldest surviving folk football traditions.
