Pelota Purépecha

Pelota purépecha (also known as uarhukua or by its Spanish name, pelota tarasca) is a traditional fire ball game played by the Purépecha people of Michoacán, Mexico, in which a ball soaked in fuel is set alight and struck through the air using curved wooden sticks, often at night. Two teams hit the flaming ball back and forth in a display that is as much ceremonial performance as sport. It is tied closely to Purépecha cultural identity and is showcased at regional festivals.
