Longue Paume

Longue paume, or "jeu de paume," is a traditional French court sport and historical ancestor of modern tennis, in which players strike a ball with the palm of the hand or, later, a paddle or racket over a net or line. It was widely played in France from the medieval period through the 19th century, giving rise to terms still used in tennis today, such as "love" and "deuce." It survives as a niche heritage sport kept alive by dedicated clubs and enthusiasts.
