Lancashire Wrestling

Lancashire wrestling (also called "catch-as-catch-can" in its early form) is a traditional English folk wrestling style from the county of Lancashire, allowing holds on any part of the body, including the legs, and permitting takedowns and pins. It developed among coal miners and mill workers in the 19th century as a rough, practical style with few restrictions compared to more formal wrestling codes. It is historically significant as a direct ancestor of modern catch wrestling and, by extension, professional wrestling and submission grappling.
