Folk Wrestling

Folk wrestling is an umbrella term for the many traditional, culturally specific wrestling styles practiced around the world outside of the standardized Olympic freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines, such as Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling in England, Swiss Schwingen, Senegalese laamb, and Turkish oil wrestling (yağlı güreş). These styles often carry deep regional history, distinctive rules on grips and holds, and ties to local festivals and cultural identity. They are practiced both as competitive sport and as a way of preserving heritage.
