Historical European Martial Arts

Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is the modern study and practice of European fighting systems from historical manuals (fechtbücher), covering weapons and techniques such as longsword, rapier, sword and buckler, and wrestling from the medieval and early modern periods. Practitioners research surviving treatises by masters like Johannes Liechtenauer or Fiore dei Liberi and train and spar using protective gear and blunted or synthetic weapons to test the techniques. HEMA has grown into an international community with clubs, tournaments, and seminars blending historical scholarship with modern martial arts training.
