Haxey Hood

Haxey Hood is a traditional English folk game held every year on the Twelfth Night (January 6th) in the village of Haxey, Lincolnshire. Large teams of local participants push and sway together in a scrum called a 'sway' to move a leather tube known as the 'hood' across fields toward one of several village pubs, with the game presided over by a 'Boggins' and a top-hatted 'Lord' of the event. It dates back centuries and draws large crowds who come to watch or take part in the boisterous, mud-soaked contest.
