Speech-language pathology is the clinical profession focused on assessing, diagnosing, and treating communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan, including speech, language, voice, fluency, and cognitive-communication issues. Practitioners, known as speech-language pathologists (SLPs), work in hospitals, schools, private clinics, and rehabilitation centers with patients ranging from children with developmental delays to adults recovering from strokes or traumatic brain injuries. The field requires a graduate degree and clinical certification, and it draws on linguistics, neurology, and psychology.
