Swallowing disorders, or dysphagia, refer to difficulty or discomfort moving food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach, often caused by stroke, neurological disease, aging, cancer treatment, or structural abnormalities. Speech-language pathologists and otolaryngologists typically diagnose and treat these conditions using swallow studies, dietary modifications, and targeted exercises. Addressing dysphagia is important to prevent malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia.
