Venatio

Venatio (plural venationes) was a blood sport staged in ancient Roman amphitheatres involving the hunting and killing of wild and exotic animals, often as a public spectacle preceding gladiatorial combats. Trained hunters called venatores fought animals like lions, bears, and elephants imported from across the empire, showcasing Rome's power and reach. These events were immensely popular but contributed to the depletion of wild animal populations in regions supplying the games.
