Shot Put

The shot put is a track and field throwing event in which athletes 'put' (push rather than throw) a heavy metal ball from the shoulder as far as possible within a marked circle. Competitors use either the glide or rotational (spin) technique to generate power, relying on explosive strength and technique. It has been part of the modern Olympics since 1896 for men and 1948 for women.
