Raffa

Raffa (raffa bocce) is a variant of Italian bocce played on smooth artificial or synthetic outdoor courts, in which players throw larger, heavier balls with a rolling or gliding technique -- as opposed to the "volo" style, which favors an aerial throw -- to land closest to a smaller target ball (the pallino/boccino). It is popular in Italy and among Italian diaspora communities, particularly in club and tournament settings. The raffa style rewards precision touch and reading the court surface over raw throwing power.
