Pallone

Pallone (fully pallone col bracciale) is a traditional Italian sport in which players strike a leather ball using a large spiked wooden armguard called a bracciale, hitting it back and forth across a long outdoor court. Once immensely popular in 19th-century Italy, drawing large crowds and gambling much like early baseball did in the U.S., it has since declined but is preserved in a few towns as a cultural heritage sport. It's considered an ancestor of some modern racket and handball-style games.
