Grant Acedrex

Grant Acedrex ("Great Chess") is a large medieval chess variant described in the 13th-century Spanish manuscript Libro de los juegos (Book of Games), commissioned by Alfonso X of Castile. It is played on an oversized 12x12 board and includes extra fantastical pieces beyond standard chess, such as the griffin, unicorn, lion, and crocodile, each with unique movement rules. The game reflects the era's interest in elaborate, expanded versions of chess circulating in medieval Islamic and European courts.
