Flying Men Dance
The Flying Men dance, known in Spanish as Danza de los Voladores ("Dance of the Flyers"), is a ceremonial ritual originating with Mesoamerican peoples such as the Totonac of Mexico. Performers climb a tall pole, then launch themselves upside down attached by ropes tied around their waists, slowly spinning to the ground while a musician atop the pole plays flute and drum. Once a religious rite tied to fertility and the cosmos, it is now also performed as a cultural spectacle for tourists and is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
