Episkyros

Episkyros was an ancient Greek ball game played by two teams who tried to throw or kick a ball over the opposing team's line while defending their own, using a mix of handling and kicking skills. It is considered one of the historical antecedents of later football codes, including rugby football, through its adoption and adaptation by the Romans as harpastum. Little detailed rule information survives, but ancient depictions show it as a vigorous, competitive team activity.
