Ekiden

Ekiden is a long-distance relay race that originated in Japan, in which a marathon-length course (or longer) is divided into stages run by different team members, each covering a set segment before handing off a sash called a tasuki. It is hugely popular in Japan, with the New Year Hakone Ekiden between universities drawing massive television audiences. The event tests both individual distance-running ability and team strategy in stage assignment.
