Contra Dance

Contra dance is a social folk dance form, rooted in English and French dance traditions and popular in the United States, in which couples form long lines and perform a repeating sequence of figures called by a caller in time with live folk or fiddle music. Partners progress up and down the set, dancing briefly with many different people throughout an evening. It draws enthusiasts for its welcoming community atmosphere, live music, and the fact that no prior dance experience or fixed partner is needed.
