Chaturanga
Chaturanga is an ancient Indian strategy board game, dating to at least the 6th century CE, that is widely regarded as the common ancestor of chess and related games such as shogi and xiangqi. Played on an 8x8 grid, it used pieces representing the four divisions of an ancient Indian army—infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots—each with movement rules that evolved into the modern chess pieces.
