Breakaway

Breakaway generally refers to a sudden separation from a group or pack in racing and team sports contexts, such as a cyclist or group of cyclists sprinting ahead of the peloton, or a player breaking free from defenders toward the goal in sports like soccer or hockey. It can also refer to "breakaway" equipment, such as breakaway roping in rodeo (see below) or safety-release gear designed to detach under stress. The term captures a decisive, high-tension moment that often determines the outcome of a race or play.
