Balkline
Balkline is a historic form of carom billiards played on a pocketless table divided by lines (balks) into zones that limit how many consecutive shots a player can make while both object balls remain within a small marked area, such as a corner. It was devised to increase difficulty and skill requirements after players became too proficient at simpler carom games in the late 19th century. It was a major competitive discipline in the early 20th century before largely being supplanted by three-cushion billiards.
