FTP is a standard network protocol used to transfer files between a client and a server over a TCP/IP network such as the internet. IT administrators and web developers historically used FTP (and its more secure variants, SFTP and FTPS) to upload website files to hosting servers, distribute large datasets, and manage remote file storage. It has largely been supplemented by more secure or cloud-based alternatives but remains in use for legacy systems and bulk file transfers.
